Differentiating Dubstep and Electro

In an age where music is becoming more creative and genres are constantly evolving, it is understandable that there is confusion with regards to defining music and differentiating genres. Two genres that are often confused with each other are dubstep and electro. Again, this is understandable, seen as experimental electronic music artists constantly seeks to cross, mix and blur the boundaries between these sub-genres of electronica and dance.

So what is dub? And what is electro? And just how do we listeners recognise each genre? We know that these two genres are often crossed and merged in the modern day music world. So, instead of looking at their current state, let’s look at how they began; this way we can identify the defining traits of each genre as both are actually very different.

Electro

Let’s start with electro. The main characteristics of this genre are, first, the drum beats. This is a genre that is heavily influenced by drums, and the overall sound is heavily injected with drum machines. Beats are faster than those exhibited in Dubstep – typical electro tracks are set at around 130 beats per minute (BPM). The main drum beats are formulaic, even and typically four beats per bar. The structure of electro music is often progressive and rhythmic, usually building up to a crescendo that erupts into a big, emphasised beat and a distinctive synth baseline.

As with all genres, electro varies from the underground to the mainstream. Electro music has become particularly prevalent on the commercial dance music scene in recent years, largely thanks to DJs and producers such as David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, Luciana and Deadmau5. All display similar traits in terms of beats, timings and build-up.

Some less mainstream examples of electro are artists such as Justice, who exhibit the same beat similarities as the mainstream artists – in terms of tempo and structure – but use other instruments and vocals to give a different, over all sound. Other less mainstream artists – often described as falling under the ‘minimal’ house genre, include M.A.N.D.Y, Booka Shade and DJ T.

Dubstep

Dubstep has completely different origins. For those that have ever had to take out caravan insurance for attending a music festival, you will know that Dubstep – which has fast grown in popularity thanks to the live and new music scene – displays many different traits to electro. However, in recent times – as the genres become more experimental and boundaries between them start to blur – new age electro has adopted many of the synths, wobbles and loops commonly exhibited in dubstep music. However, wobbles and synths aside, Dubstep can be easily identified by its drum patterns. In general, dubstep rhythm is normally syncopated and shuffled. Another common trait is a snare type drum or clap beat inserted into every third beat in each bar.

As a general rule, Dubstep drums are slower – and often more irregular. Typically, a dubstep track will display a BPM of around 140 – however this is usually produced at a half-step, so making the music sound like it is actually only 70 BPM. Other typical characteristics of dubstep are of course, the wobs – digitally distorted and altered synthesisers that result in a distinctive, bassy wobble sound. Often the tempo of dubstep varies throughout the song, sometimes getting slower on the introduction of the main wob riff.

Like electro, dubstep has become very popular, mainly in the last two years or so, largely thanks to the likes of groups like Skrillex, Chase and Status, Rusko and Benga, although its real commercialisation comes from mainstream producers tapping into its popularity and incorporating elements of it into modern pop music. Also, several mainstream radio presenters started to play it regularly in the early 2000s.

Inception Dubstep: The Redux

So, I’ve decided to remake my popular video mix ‘Inception Dubstep’, using a fresh, higher quality copy of the film, and remixing more than just the Cafe scene.

I’ve been trying to think what would be a good 20,000 subscriber milestone video. So far I have 4 videos, all done and ready to upload. But I’m just not happy with any of them as my ‘big achievement’ video, if you get what I mean. So the plan is now to remake ID and have that as my late, but great 20k video.
